Types of Questions (and Answers)

General

This page is a fairly comprehensive visual overview of all available question types and it is meant as a starting point to get to detailed information about every question type.

It veers towards the technical, so if you find it all a little overwhelming, don’t worry, we will be quite happy (as part of our service) to help you decide how your questions should be answered.

Remember: A survey consists of question groups which contain one or more question. So you have to create a question group first before you can add questions to your survey.

Arrays

The Array question type (sometimes referred to as Array Multi Flexible) further extends the List question type. Using this question type a matrix can be displayed in which columns are represented by subquestion and the same answer options are shown for each row. The text of the question can be either a specific question or a description.

In terms of output there is no difference in how responses are stored compared to question type ‘List(Radio). In both cases the given answer is stored in its separate column in the result table.

Beside the most flexible array types ‘Array’, ‘Array (Text)’ and ‘Array (Numbers)’ the software also supports a number of convenience array types which have predefined answer options.

Array (Numbers)

The Array (Numbers) question type allows a large array of numbered dropdown boxes with a set of subquestions as the “y-axis”, and another set of subquestions as the “x-axis”. It provides for a very large display of question and answers. By default the dropdown box contains the numbers from 1 to 10, however this can be changed by adjusting the question attributes. The behaviour is like this: If you only specify a minimum value the range will adjust as min value + 10, if you only specify a max value, the range will be 1 and max value. When both min and max are present if min > max , no dropdown box will be displayed otherwise it works as usual.

You can set a special question attribute to use this question type with checkboxes:

Array (Text)

The Array (Text) question type allows a large array of text boxes with a set of subquestions as the “y-axis”, and another set of subquestions as the “x-axis”. It provides for a very large display of question and answers:

Text questions

The software provides a number of possible variations of the standard text field. All of these can be defined further using the ‘Advanced question’ settings which permit restriction of the number of characters as well as the size of the field.
